The implications of conversion in Malaysia, a multiracial Muslim-majority country, extend beyond a mere personal choice. The country has a dual justice system: the secular common laws, and the religious sharia laws. This includes matters concerning inheritance, marriage, divorce, welfare, and prayers. Knowing such consequences, a non-Muslim in a relationship with a Muslim knows that conversion represents the act of breaking the boundary between experiencing religion as strictly personal, and placing oneself underneath an expansive, legalistic religion enforced by the state. This requirement can make things difficult, but many Malaysians have crossed ethnic and religious boundaries in forming relationships and families. New Naratif spoke to 13 individuals about their experiences with interracial relationships.

The transformations wrought in the Atlantic world during the colonial era brought Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans into sustained contact in the Americas for the first time, fostering interethnic mixing, sexual violence and intimacy, and intermarriage. In a wide variety of colonial sites across the Atlantic, interracial marriages expanded kinship and trading networks, cemented military and political alliances, and facilitated the adaptation and survival of Native communities.
Interracial marriages not only provided economic and social benefits to European and Euro-American explorers, traders, and settlers and the indigenous populations whom they encountered, they also served as a powerful political tool in contested borderlands far from imperial centers. In Latin America, North America, the Caribbean, and along the West African coast, European males mingled socially and sexually with women of Indian, African, and mixed heritage, though the vast majority of these interracial relationships took place outside the sanctity of marriage, and many involved some level of coercion.
Responses to the frequency and visibility of illicit interracial relations were nonetheless uneven and changed over time, as the emergence of legal, social, and cultural prohibitions against interracial marriage prevented the widespread acceptance of racially exogamous mixed unions and intermarriage. Focusing on official attitudes toward and legal restrictions on racial interaction and interracial marriage as well as everyday practices, these newer studies track the extent to which colonial policies varied in response to local conditions and broader imperial developments.

JAKARTA – In Indonesia, interfaith marriage is legal but culturally discouraged and some religious figures have made it their mission to help couples of different religious backgrounds get married despite societal obstacles. But what if neither wants to switch faiths? Some have solved this problem by getting married in Singapore or Australia, where different religious backgrounds are a non-issue. Among those coming to the rescue such couples is Mohammad Monib, director of the Indonesian Conference on Religion and Peace, a religious freedom advocacy group in Jakarta, who says he has helped more than interfaith couples marry in the last decade.
He does this by making them aware of their rights and guiding them through the rules and paperwork. Monib, a Muslim, is married to a Muslim woman and thus never personally experienced these problems, but he feels compelled to defend those who do.

Is the growing multiracial population changing the US racial structure? Quantitative analyses of profiles drawn from the largest online dating website, combined with observer racial classifications of profile photos, reveal divergent patterns in racial preferences among multiracials who self-identify as part-Black compared with those who do not. Non-Black multiracials express racial preferences that are more similar to Whites than to minorities, consistent with Whitening theories suggesting that these groups situate themselves closer to Whites and reinforce the existing racial hierarchy.
In particular, among self-identified part-Black multiracials, those whom others view as non-Black are much more accepting of Whites as dates than are those whom others classify as Black. Since preferences for dating Whites vary substantially among individuals who self-identify as part-Black depending upon their observed race, this suggests a decline in the salience of the one-drop rule, even while some aspects of Black exceptionalism persist among multiracials whom others classify solely as Black.

Our analyses show large differences in endogamy across groups. People assume that, because we are of different faiths, we must have major problems in our relationship. In fact, it has strengthened our bond. We figured what we did share — similar values, similar worldviews, and a similarly strong faith in God — was enough. Eight years, three kids, and one beautiful marriage later, that strategy seems to be working. We are not alone. Interfaith relationships — as well as the pairing of a secular and a religious partner — are on the rise.
We often get questions from people who assume there must be major problems — ones unique to interfaith couples. And, perhaps most importantly, how do we raise our kids? No doubt there are some unique challenges to interfaith relationships. But some problems are unavoidable when two people — of any background — come together. On the other hand, there are some advantages in interfaith relationships. There are studies that show that interfaith couples are better at communicating with one another than same-faith couples.
In particular, they are better at communicating effectively and coming to an agreement about important issues. Perhaps this is because interfaith couples recognise from the start that they will have to negotiate their religious differences, and so they quickly learn how to carry this skill into other aspects of the relationship.

Opposition to miscegenation, thereby preserving their race’s purity and nature, is a typical theme of racial supremacist movements. Though the notion that racial mixing is undesirable has arisen at different points in history, it gained particular prominence in Europe during the era of colonialism. Although the term “miscegenation” was formed from the Latin miscere “to mix” plus genus “race” or “kind”, and it could therefore be perceived as value-neutral, it is almost always a pejorative term used by people who believe in white racial superiority and purity.
In Spanish America, the term mestizaje , which is derived from mestizo —the blending of European whites and Indigenous peoples of the Americas , is used to refer to racial mixing. In the present day, the word miscegenation is avoided by many scholars, because the term suggests that race is a concrete biological phenomenon, rather than a categorization imposed on certain relationships.
The term’s historical use in contexts that typically implied disapproval is also a reason why more unambiguously neutral terms such as interracial , interethnic or cross-cultural are more common in contemporary usage.

Rutgers University Press is dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge for a wide range of readers. They enhance the work of their authors through exceptional publications that shape critical issues, spark debate, and enrich teaching. Rutgers also distributes books published by Bucknell University Press. Combining a narrative voice with vivid, passionate, and painful accounts of the families of death row inmates, the book demonstrates that crimes that lead to death sentences also devastate the families of those convicted.
These families, King argues, are the unseen victims of capital punishment. King challenges readers to question the morality of a punishment that victimizes families of the condemned and ripples out through future generations. Chapters tell the stories of families that have lost life savings supporting an accused loved one, endured intense public scrutiny, been subjected to harassment by the media, and are struggling to live with the inhumane treatment that their loved ones receive on death row.
The author also explores the unique nature of the grief that these families suffer. On a human level, this book is a powerful reminder that tragic events have tragic consequences that far outreach their immediate victims. At the same time, the accounts illustrate many of the flaws inherent in the judicial system—racial and economic bias, incompetent counsel, prosecutorial misconduct, the execution of juveniles, and wrongful convictions, some of which are only now being overturned because of recent advances in DNA technology.
